I TAUGHT myself continental knitting a few years ago after watching an online video of ‘speed knitter’ Miriam Tegels. I’d been trying to work on my technique – I’m rather slow and clunky when I knit in the English style, with a bit too much ‘throwing’ going on. SIONNACH YARNS is an indie dye company based in south-west Ireland, run by Sophie Fontaine. She creates delicate, elegant colourways using natural dyes and yarn bases including Corriedale wool, baby alpaca and mohair-silk. We talked with Sophie about her hand-dyeing journey. When did you first try dyeing yarn? “Around three years ago. I saw a podcast in which the lady was dyeing yarn with onion skins, and it seemed so easy.
