Kay Gardiner and Ann Shayne of Mason-Dixon Knitting have long been inspired by the work of designer Kaffe Fassett, and for the latest in their series of Field Guide pattern books, they have invited Kaffe to share his expertise in colour combining and creative use of motifs. Kaffe has used his favourite yarn, Rowan’s Felted Tweed, while his legendary talent for devising stripes and patterns in contrasting and harmonising colours is clearly on display. Q I find it can be tricky to block my knitted hats properly, especially when I’ve used a Fair Isle or cabled pattern - can you provide any tips? A Depending on the shape that you wish to achieve, hats can be blocked in a number of ways. For a beret or tam-style of hat, stretch the damp hat over a dinner plate of the correct diameter (1). If you would like your hat to be particularly stretched, you can thread a strong cotton yarn through the ribbing or brim, and pull it tight and tie. JENNIE ATKINSON’S latest design is a short-sleeved jacket with a dramatic shape. It’s knitted in two pieces in a stretchy horizontal rib pattern, using short-row shaping to make the ribs fan out from the lower fronts. “THE INSPIRATION for this cardigan was the lichen, mosses and stone that I have seen in the lanes near my home,” says Mary Henderson. “I wanted to create the feeling of fading in and out of colours, and the Spindrift yarn shades do this beautifully.” The body is worked in stranded colourwork, while the cropped sleeves use a lace rib pattern. “THEY CALL it ‘painting the string’,” laughs Marcin Lorkowski, referring to non-knitters who are bewildered as to what his job entails.
