ORIGINALLY FROM Norway, Kari-Helene Rane is a knitwear designer based in the UK. She studied fashion design at Kingston University, and went on to produce many incredibly beautiful knitting patterns for Purl Alpaca Designs. Her most recent work includes projects for The Fibre Co. “BIG AND little flowers worked in two colours of hand-dyed, variegated yarn form the palette of this vintage-influenced cardigan,” says Mary Henderson. “The fronts and back are worked flat, then joined at the shoulders in a three-needle cast-off. The sleeves are knitted in the round to the armhole, then worked straight in rows – double decreases create a gathered sleeve head. BACK IN 1997, one of the biggest cinema hits of the year was The Full Monty, a comedy about a group of ex-steelworkers in Sheffield who turn to stripping to earn a living. Fast forward to 2019 and it’s knitting, not striptease, that’s taking centre stage in the South Yorkshire city, but with a name that pays homage to the film that put Sheffield on the cinematic map. The Wool Monty yarn festival is the brainchild of yarn-addicted married couple Mand Beckett and Debbie Gascoigne, and their daughter Rosie Rowland. A couple of years ago, Debbie switched careers from nursing and opened a yarn shop, Woolfull, in Derbyshire. “MY SWEATER was inspired by planted bulbs, which are represented by the long lines of eyelets,” explains Emma Vining. “As the plants begin to grow, the leaves spread out over the planted ridges and a central flower head emerges. The flower heads are formed using a double eyelet and twisted stitch combination.
