PRESENTING PIP Baa Ram Ewe has launched its fifth yarn range, called Pip Colourwork - a pure wool created with stranded colourwork in mind. The 4ply yarn comes in 25g balls, with 116m per ball and costing £3.20 each. Renée Callahan’s latest pattern e-book is filled with the understated elegance and attention to detail we’ve come to expect from the EastLondonKnit designer. There are two garment patterns and four accessories in the Recollection e-book. Feminine, vintage style abounds with ‘A Sweater for Lucille’. Q I’ve come across a pattern that calls for bullion stitch embroidery - how do I do that? A Bullion stitch - also known as bullion knots - can add texture to your knitted fabric, and Jennie Atkinson has used the technique on her ‘Cicely’ cardigan on page 58. The base for a bullion knot is a simple back stitch, and the width of this back stitch determines the width of your finished knot. 1 To work the stitch, choose a hole (between two knitted stitches) and bring your embroidery needle through the fabric from the back to the front. Emma Vining Shimmer “MY SHIMMER design uses a series of mirrored cables to create a cardigan with subtle diagonal lines,” says Emma Vining. “Wide rib pleats feature on the lower part of the garment. The cables are worked on the upper sections to create the shimmer. A reverse stocking stitch ridge creates horizontal lines to emphasise the cables. “The cable shimmers are made by moving two stitches from each wide rib column edge over the central ‘P2’ of the rib to the next column. This is not a traditional hap structure, but was inspired by the Lancashire cotton and woollen mill girls and women of the 19th century, so needs a small explanation. I wanted to make a workaday shawl (a ‘hap’), and was inspired by the practical, warm-looking, brightly coloured shawls of Lancashire mill workers of the 19th century. But these shawls were woven, not knitted. So I was looking for a way to knit a warm, functional shawl for everyday use, with the bold, geometric design of the woven shawls. DARIO TUBIANA is a young Italian designer who has been wowing us with his modern interpretations of classic lopi sweaters, and his creative ways with colourwork. He has been publishing his patterns on Ravelry only since 2016, but he is quickly developing into an exciting designer to watch.
