I WAS recently fortunate enough to travel to Shetland – a must-visit destination for obsessive Fair Isle knitters like me. I can’t believe it has taken me so long, but as soon as my feet hit the ground in Lerwick, I felt like I was in my knitterly home. One of the names that is so intrinsically linked with Shetland for me is Hazel Tindall. You may know that she was once crowned the World’s Fastest Knitter, but she is so much more than that. IN 1931, the English businessman Frank W Michell went to Peru in search of chinchilla fur, but instead the fine alpaca fleece produced in the country’s highlands caught his eye. He established the Michell company in the city of Arequipa, becoming the first to set quality and colour standards for alpaca fibre. In 1940 Michell opened Peru’s first alpaca processing plant, and is lauded with founding the country’s alpaca industry, with his company today buying 60% of the country’s alpaca clip. The Michell company helped to create the Mirasol handknitting brand in 2007, and has its origins in raising educational standards for local children.
