IN LAST month’s Masterclass, we looked at adding length to a garment once it had been cast off. This time, we are going to look at adding width. Before you begin, undo the side seams of your sweater, and block any garment pieces if required. Bear in mind that any width added to the body will also need to be added to the sleeve (and vice versa) in order for the sleeve cap to fit in to the armhole. For example, if width is added to the body only, the armhole will be too wide for the original sleeve to fit into. If both the sleeves and the body on the original garment are too narrow, then a strip the same width can simply be added to both pieces. However,…

THE BENEFITS of alpaca yarn are well known: the scales in alpaca fleece lay flatter than those of sheep’s wool, making it softer against the skin; alpaca fleece doesn’t contain any lanolin, either, so it avoids issues with wool allergies. As alpaca is a hollow fibre, it’s warmer than wool, and it wicks away water, making it almost waterproof. Alpacas are also gentle and attractive animals, so if you’ve wondered about keeping alpacas as pets, and using their fleece to spin and knit with, we’ve got some advice on what to consider. There are two breeds of alpaca, the Huacaya and the Suri. The most common by far is the Huacaya, which has a dense fleece that grows outwards. HUNTER HAMMERSEN is perhaps best known for her beautiful sock patterns, but she also loves to design shawls and other accessories. She writes and publishes her own knitting books through her wonderfully named Pantsville Press website. Who taught you to knit? “I confess my early forays into knitting were rather solitary. LAST YEAR at Yarndale, a family visited my stand and got chatting about sheep, fleece and the price of wool. As we exchanged business cards, I was surprised to see the name of my father, John Atkinson, printed on it - and so I had met another shepherd called John Atkinson! Together, John and his partner Maria tend Nibthwaite Grange Farm in the Lake District.
