Designer Clare Devine took a road trip around Dorset - and the textures and colours she saw on her seaside adventure inspired this new collection of six knitting patterns, all using yarns by independent hand-dyers. ‘Kimmeridge’ is a comfortable cardigan with a shawl collar, sized to fit busts of 27in to 54in, which will be perfect for walks on the beach. ‘Lulworth Cove’ is a richly textured hat with a folded brim, which will provide a touch of extra warmth on a blustery day out. Q I hate weaving in loose ends. Is there a way to avoid the process? A One of our favourite ways is to felt the ends of the yarn. Sometimes referred to as ‘spit-splicing’, the idea is to moisten both old and new ends of yarn (using water or spit) and felt the two ends into one, by rubbing your palms together and creating friction. Note that this technique will only work with yarns that are at least 70% wool; acrylic and cotton will not felt. 1 To prepare the yarns, pull apart the plied ends and graduate the lengths of them over about 15cm. Andrea Jurgrau Denali Stole THIS EXQUISITE shawl by Andrea Jurgrau was named for Denali, the highest peak in North America. The project starts from the centre, with large beaded leaf motifs. BORN IN CANADA and now living in France, Tammy is relatively new to the knitwear scene, but is already showing great promise as a creative designer. To coincide with the publication of her shawl pattern in our pull-out booklet, we took the chance to find out how she began designing, and who motivates her. WITH ITS grey fleece and white smiling face, the Herdwick is one of the most instantly recognisable British sheep breeds. Native to The Lake District, where they graze the fells and fields, Herdwicks have grown in popularity over recent years via the books and social media feeds of ‘Herdy Shepherd’, James Rebanks. I spoke to Lake District shepherdess and wool producer Mary Bell of Crookabeck Farm, who came to sheep farming via another characterful creature: the angora goat. “My first angora goats flew from Canada to Heathrow in 1990. I had previously kept dairy goats, but instantly fell in love with the angoras as soon as I saw them.
