The British Deer Society (BDS) has launched its new initiative, Together for Deer. Aimed at protecting deer welfare, mitigating threats and looking for ways to create a sustainable future, the project comes at a critical time, with deer populations thought to be at their highest for more than 1,000 years.
According to the charity, the new strategy, which will run until 2030, reflects a commitment to its vision of creating a world where deer are valued, respected and thrive in harmony with the environment.
David McAuley, chief executive officer of the BDS, is particularly worried for the welfare of deer in the current climate. “As populations and urbanisation increase, alongside efforts to reverse biodiversity loss and climate change, impacts on deer are escalating,” he explains.
