Cosima Swerling, aged eight, read The Field’s cover article on the plight of red squirrels [March 2022 issue] and vowed to help. She organised a group of friends at school and on Tuesday, 17 May, they took a trip to Parliament to visit Cosima’s MP, Gillian Keegan, local MP for Chichester.
The schoolgirls were accompanied by Cosima’s grandfather, former MP Anthony Nelson. Their petition, which had 480 signatures, asked for further action to save red squirrels; primarily, more Government support for the grey squirrel fertility-control programme, described in The Field, and the planting of more broadleaved and coniferous trees, which benefit red squirrels. The girls gave the petition to Ms Keegan, who was very receptive to their concerns and promised to present them to the Government.
