For those who dwell in the countryside, there is little more cheering than spotting a rare bird, or one not as abundant as it once was, perched in a hedgerow or nesting on a moor. Restoring populations too often falls to gamekeepers, landowners and farmers, the unsung heroes of this vital cause, with their remarkable and successful projects (see page 44). We understand that these stewards, and fieldsports, safeguard biodiversity – and will continue to do so long after we are gone. Now is the time to ensure we are doing all we can to help.
