Apple Biscoff Galette Serves 6 to 8 1 (14.1-ounce) packagerefrigerated pie crusts1 cup crunchy Bisco spread4 Granny Smith apples, peeled,cored, and sliced ¼ inch thick1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice1 tablespoon vanilla extract1 cup granulated sugar1 tablespoon cornstarch1 tablespoon all-purpose flour1 teaspoon apple pie spice¼ teaspoon salt2 tablespoons sliced almonds1 large egg2 tablespoons water2 tablespoons coarse sugarGarnish: fresh thyme 1. It’s not every child that has mystery doors lining the halls of their home, but Roy and Becky Morton’s children are lucky. It all started when Roy hung one old barn door in their home. “I had this large wall, and I could have hung art, but I had doors. So I hung them like art, thinking of the wall like the mat,” he explains. Roy says the kids would play “what’s behind the doors,” so it became art that entertained. The reason Roy has so many doors is because he owns Architectural Heritage, a source for architectural antiques. Mantels, statuary, chimney pots, iron gates, and, of course, reclaimed doors dating from the 18th and 19th centuries are available. “I started working part time in my mom’s antiques shop. Then…

When Mark and Nancy Peeples built their cozy cottage nearly 12 years ago, they designed it with the mountains in mind. “My husband loves the West, the mountains, and hunting,” Nancy says. “So we were trying to have some sort of comfortable, elegant version of that.” Their charming cottage exterior is sided with hand-split cedar shakes and is unlike any of the homes in their neighborhood. “We’ve got a real mountain retreat in the middle of [Alabama],” she laughs. The couple’s enchanting abode exudes an upscale elegance while still maintaining personal touches. With the help of interior designer Mary Finch, Nancy outfitted her cottage with one-of-a-kind salvaged finds and antiques from around the world. After a job change and a move to another state, Cathy and Mike Harris searched for a new home until they happened upon this rustic cabin. Cathy says that rustic is their preferred style, but she also enjoys the flow of open spaces common in modern designs. “I liked that the kitchen area was open to the other rooms,” Cathy explains. Originally built in 1891, it’s unlikely this cabin even had a kitchen until many years later. On the edge of the room Cathy proudly points out old logs and chinking that are marks of what is thought to be the early exterior of the cabin. Today’s working kitchen extends from there. Potter Frank Vickery throws all kinds of clay vessels, from small coffee mugs to pots that are nearly as tall as he is. He particularly likes to throw bowls, he says, because of the way they perfectly combine beauty and function. “A good bowl has a belly that is curvaceous and full,” Frank says, and the rim should stretch out “like someone stretching their arms while leaning back in a chair.” Frank’s specialities include sinks, which are simply bowls with drains, and the ones he creates have proven popular. “The reason I came to sinks is I enjoy the relationship between functional and fine art,” he says. “It is something people use every day, so it’s very rewarding.” Frank began focusing on the ancient Chinese technique of oil-spot glazes as…

Barbara Tickle and her husband, Charlie, have enjoyed weekend escapes to the mountains for more than 40 years. Nine years ago they decided it was time to put roots down in their favorite vacation oasis and build an incredible dream cabin in the hills of North Carolina. With the help of builder Dearl Stewart and architect Mark Paullin their dream became a reality. Anne and Pooh Sprague met when they both joined the 4-H Club at age 15, but the relationship didn’t get romantic until college. The moment after they graduated, they wasted no time getting married.
