When designer Ken StÜckenschneider approaches a space, he begins by looking at the light. So, when he was searching for a place closer to his childhood home in Missouri, he considered more than 40 properties to find the right one. “I knew from experience having grown up on the plains … what good light should be in a house, and this house had it,” he says. When Debbie Johnson and her husband downsized from their previous home, Debbie was sure to take all the antique furniture she had collected over the years with her. “I just think they’re beautiful, timeless pieces,” she says of the furnishings that fill the home. With the help of designers Anne Turner Carroll and, later, Cameron Mobley, Debbie arranged her beloved pieces in the new space and complemented them with paint colors and patterns that create an inviting spirit in each room. After more than 25 years, Rhonda Montgomery’s garden doesn’t need much in the way of new shrubs and trees, but every year, she looks forward to shopping for annuals. They’re destined for the antique iron and concrete urns that she places strategically in the landscape. “Years ago, I knew I wouldn’t have help with the garden—my husband doesn’t do yardwork,” she explains. “Since I wanted to have something blooming all the time, I bought all these fabulous urns at estate sales. Adele Mouzon and Mark Perry’s home in Arlington, Virginia, is no stranger to history. Built in 1933 by the American singer Kate Smith, the home has the bones of a traditional colonial, and despite a renovation in the ’80s that left it bogged down with heavy oak trim and terra-cotta tile, the couple was able to see through to the charm beneath. “We changed everything, basically,” Adele says. After purchasing the property in 2008, she and Mark launched into a renovation that added a second story to the back of the house, gutted the kitchen, increased the size of the dining room, moved stairways, and more. “Everything was changed to try to make it more like a traditional colonial, the way it should have been.” The home now features elements…

Pretty and practical can coexist—such is the mantra of any cottage homeowner, and Sonja and Ronnie Fleming are no exception. When building their craftsman-style home, they paid attention to every little detail, right down to the pantry. While Ronnie took over the handiwork, Sonja fulfilled her heart’s desire and styled every nook and cranny. When it came to the pantry, Sonja let her vintage-inspired imagination run wild. While traveling on the Washington coastline, you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find a traditional sveitserhus, a house style that found popularity in Norway in the late 1800s, but Beth and Jack Kollé have never been ones to follow the trend, and thus, their house wouldn’t either.
