The “wearing” of a cane hasn’t been popular in the United States since Fred Astaire danced in his top hat and tails. But during the 19th and early 20th century, the cane was a status symbol as world-famous designers including Fabergé and Tiffany created canes for society’s elite. Exotic woods were carved and then adorned with precious metals and jewels. An Edwardian gentleman would have at least three canes in his wardrobe, a country or day cane, an evening cane, and a system or gadget cane. When Susan and Tom Lynch married in 2011, the couple combined more than their lives—they also merged their styles. Each boasting an eye for design—Susan’s more “cottagey,” Tom’s more modern—the couple created a home that’s both classic and comfortable. “He had a lot, and I had a lot,” Susan recalls of her and Tom’s favorite pieces, “but we put it all together and figured out how to make it work.” Sometimes that meant getting creative. Several years ago, Lana Swatek and her son, Chace, began renovating a small house that was brimming with potential. Meanwhile, two bright blue blossoms are bursting on the thunbergia, there are some baby blue flowers bouncing on the chirita when the wind jiggles the windows, and the paphiopedilum is still lingering in the bathroom after its debut several weeks ago. Countless amaryllis (hippeastrum) are trumpeting their wares, the leaves of a kalanchoe are buried behind its clouds of sizzling orange blossoms, and the citrus has sent its perfume roaming throughout my office all morning.
