But when walking into the Schoenith family living room, you’re smack in the creative center of the house. It’s the office and design hub for Ashley Schoenith’s small business, IceMilk Aprons. Asked about the company’s name, Ashley explains, “IceMilk Aprons was inspired by my grandmother, Cele. She was a masterful seamstress with a love for cooking and an art for entertaining. The priority that topped the list for Georg Andersen and his wife, Annabelle, when they began their search for a perfect mountain getaway: room for seating and sleeping for their beloved family— including nine growing grandchildren. APPLE PRALINE PIE Makes 1 (9-inch) deep-dish pie 1 (14.01-ounce) box refrigerated pie crusts 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup chopped pecans, divided 1⁄3 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1⁄4 teaspoon salt 6 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, halved, cored, and sliced 1⁄4 inch thick 1⁄4 cup packed dark brown sugar 3 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons half-and-half 1. Scarecrows are nearly as old as agriculture itself. Wherever farmers planted, there were hungry birds waiting to hop along the rows and feast on newly sown seeds or growing crops. The idea of frightening them away with figures dressed in cast-off clothes was surprisingly universal, from ancient Greece to eighthcentury Japan. The practice was usually—and frustratingly—ineffective, as anyone who has attempted to keep birds and animals out of the garden knows. Apparently the first use of “scarecrow” appeared in Daniel Defoe’s novel Robinson Crusoe, although the character was referring to a row of dead crows that he hung up to keep other birds from eating his corn. That rather grim image may be partly why the scarecrow sometimes represents a sinister and creepy character (like one of Batman’s nemeses), but…

At the revered North Bennet Street School of trades and fine craftmanship, President Miguel Gómez-Ibáñez and his colleagues strive to create objects to their highest proficiency that are both practical and handsome. As a more-than-20-year trained architect who needed a break from his highly structured work, Miguel enrolled in the school’s cabinetry and furnituremaking program. “I wanted to work with my hands, be creative,” he explains, and this nurturing environment for organic art forms inspired Miguel so much that in 2006, he became the school’s director.
