For Paula Bruso, it was love at first sight. The 1830s stable hand’s cottage was the only house she had to look at when relocating to Centerbrook, Connecticut, in 1997. No matter that it was a serious fixer-upper and that she had to position buckets under the drips, she just rolled up her sleeves and kept the paintbrushes poised. Paula was copacetic with an extended renovation as long as she could look outside. When she initially beheld the house, it was the windows that sweetened the deal because Paula loved the fact that they were plentiful with no two alike. In 1988, Carol and Larry Umbarger began growing lavender, yarrow, and other flowers and herbs to help with college expenses for their children. They jumped into wreath-making in 1991 when a Smith & Hawken vendor needed help filling an order. Now all three sons and a daughter-inlaw work full time at the business, and the oldest five of Carol and Larry’s 11 grandchildren are learning the ropes too. Twelve years ago, the business outgrew the Umbargers’ home ranch near King City, California, and they moved operations to a 20-acre spread in Greenfield, California. Carol missed the flowers, however, and before long, she and Larry had replanted half the home acreage in lavender. “I am totally passionate about growing the lavender,” Carol says. “I really do love it.” While the sharp,…

Joan Cunning’s memories of Balboa Island go back to her days as a girl scout coming to the island for spring break. During the passing years visits continued, and eventually she and her husband bought a lot on the corner of Park and Amethyst Avenue. It measured only 30x85 feet, but two houses sat on the property, each with 750 square feet and a patio. Early on the Cunnings rented the cottages to summer tourists. KATRINA COTTAGES Made popular by the need for emergency housing after Hurricane Katrina, the quaint, prefabricated Katrina cottages are typically small, single story cottages constructed from factory-made panels. Because they a re prefabricated, these extremely durable cottages can be built quickly and economically, often within a few days. Style Idea When working with a small space, decorator Tonya G. Kilpatrick suggests finding furniture pieces that can be utilized in more than one way, like the side tables pictured here that can also be used as stools for extra seating in the kitchen or living area. The first time Julie and Brian O’Keefe walked into their 1950s cottage in the hills above Los Angeles, Julie was ready to walk right back out. “It had absolutely zero character,” she says. Its 1,300 square feet were a mishmash of dated surfaces, bland architecture, and an uninspired layout. But Brian, who saw potential beneath its plainness, persuaded Julie to put her design eye to work. “He had the vision, and I executed it,” Julie says. Changing the floor plan wasn’t in the cards, so the couple focused on freshening the home’s face. Hickory flooring went down; tongue-and-groove ceilings went up. When planning their vacation home, Joanne and Bruce Montgomery knew exactly where to look for inspiration. Their property on Whidbey Island in Washington state was once home to a summer inn used by fishermen from 1905 to 1947 when Holmes Harbor was a famous fishing spot. “We wanted the interior to have the look and feel of a classic fishing lodge with a great room like a lobby and the fit and finish to be evocative of the original structure,” Bruce says. The Montgomerys presented architect Ross Chapin with old photos of the inn and shared its history (the original structure was torn down after a fire). “The historic inn was a classic white clapboard building with a hipped roof and wraparound porch,” Ross says. “Those were our design cues.…
