Today cutting boards come in all shapes and sizes and are displayed on kitchen countertops and hung on kitchen walls. Although maple has long been the wood of choice for the boards, bamboo has become a popular option. Collectors often focus on a single shape or animal, and pigs seem to be at the top of the list. Popularity may be explained by the Chinese and Europeans’ belief that the pig was a symbol of wealth that had the power to bring good luck. Homeowner Margaret Ritchie has fond childhood memories of her Aunt Marmee’s pig cutting board that sat behind the kitchen faucet. The Tincher family purchased their home in 1998, and as their young family grew, Barry and Sandra decided to remove walls between the small kitchen and dining rooms for easier entertaining. Sandra soon realized that the Habersham cabinet she purchased at a charity auction was the exact feel she had in mind for her kitchen. She loved the distressed look and sought to combine her love of art with stone and metal colors. So to begin their kitchen rennovation, the Tinchers consulted with their contractor, Bob Yongue, and designer, Lee Welden. Caroline Bailey’s gracious home is filled with furnishings that bear the patina of age. This homeowner’s career in the estate and antiques business has given her an affection and an appreciation for well-loved treasures from the past. “Of course, I love old things,” Caroline explains. “It’s hard for me to update with contemporary details because my heart and soul are with the antiques. I’m still trying to ‘marry’ modern and old.” A recent kitchen renovation put those blending skills to the test. In Pat Camp’s opinion, good home design centers around good kitchen design. “It’s such an integral part of a home that that’s the place you should really start,” she says. So when she and her husband built their home, creating their ideal kitchen was crucial to the plans. For Pat, ideal meant efficient, simple, and classic. She gave up kitchen space in order to accommodate a full ground-floor office for her husband, who works from home. But she found that she didn’t mind the limited square footage, as it helps to keep crowds from gathering as she cooks. “It’s not a place where people congregate; that’s just how I prefer it,” Pat says. Interestingly enough, the story of Pyrex doesn’t start in the kitchen—it starts on the railroad. In 1908 research scientists at Corning Glass Works created a glass insert for railroad lanterns that could withstand extreme temperature changes. “I’ve never had any professional training, but this is one of my passions—I love to decorate,” says homeowner Eric Goss. From the very beginning, Eric approached the project with enthusiasm. “I literally picked the house plan based on a piano,” he says. He didn’t own a piano at the time. But his partner played, so he decided the dining room needed space for a piano, as well as a table. An 1880 historic Gothic Revival home inspired the design of this new lakeside cottage in the scenic enclave of Huntsville, Utah. “The vision of the homeowner was to build a home that looked like it could have been there for 100 years. Through the mastery and expertise of the design team, including our historical interior and exterior designer, Derek Mecham, the home became exactly what our wonderful clients envisioned,” recounts designer Kathy Oviatt.
