Born on October 7, 1848, in Chertsey, Hugh Fortescue Locke King inherited his huge, 4600 acre family estate, located mostly in Surrey, in 1885. A year earlier, he’d married 20-year-old Ethel Gore Browne, the youngest daughter of Sir Thomas Gore Browne, governor of Tasmania and later New Zealand. Ethel was to support and encourage her husband’s lavishness, including the building of Brooklands race circuit.
Almost from the outset of motorcar development, the Locke Kings were captivated but concerned there were no suitable motorcar testing facilities in the UK. They decided to take action.
