I’ve just written a book about my life so I have been looking back quite a bit lately. So let’s go back to when I was 16. I was spending all of my time playing guitar during the day, and then at night, I was causing trouble with my friends on the Lower East Side of Manhattan trying to sell little bags of pot. But did anyone expect 2025 to include a rerun of the notorious Blur-versus-Oasis battle of August 1995, where the two bands dominated multiple media cycles by releasing head-to-head singles in a race to the top of the charts? When you’re a middle-aged woman, you’re constantly told to take supplements, get resistance bands, do weights, take up yoga, eat truckloads of protein, limit fatty foods, stay hydrated, exercise your pelvic floor, walk in nature, do Pilates, give up alcohol and meditate. IMMIGRATION Adult social care has been pushed to the brink by the government’s overseas care worker ban Workers from outside the UK “hold up” the social care system in England – yet government immigration reforms will make it “all-but impossible” to recruit staff. As the government bans visas for overseas care workers, that’s the damning verdict issued by sector leaders. The end of overseas care recruitment will slash immigration numbers by 7,000 people a year, the Home Office predicts. For weeks this summer, firefighters have battled flames across Langdale Moor in the North York Moors National Park. The fire has scorched more than 2,000 acres – about 10 square miles – inland between Scarborough and Whitby, and at the time of writing is still alight. Smoke travelled more than 30 miles, drifting into York, where residents were told to keep windows closed. Buried Second World War munitions on the moors exploded in the heat. More than 46,000 hectares of land have burned across the UK so far this year – a national record, equivalent to an area the size of Nottingham. As far back as he can remember, Dexys Midnight Runners lynchpin Kevin Rowland has struggled with anxiety and a deep-seated inferiority complex. Even while topping the early ’80s charts with irrefutable pop classics Geno and Come on Eileen, Rowland was beset by doubt, guilt, paranoia and self-destructive impulses. Regular Street Art contributor Oubaiche is an Algerian-French artist. This collage was composed at 240Project, an activity centre in London supporting vulnerable adults. I Got You she describes as one of her “favourite” artworks that she has made and “a piece to support our mental health”. “I found a collection of black and white photographs of hands in a magazine,” says Oubaiche. “I decided to create a visual story like a sculpture in a frame. I’m a scientist by nature and have been since the age of five when my dad bought a set of encyclopaedias that had a section on the stars and planets. From that point on I was hooked by the wonders of the universe and ended up doing a PhD in astronomy, before becoming a freelance science writer. But I’ve always had another passion, which I think came from my mum. She was a talented amateur soprano and used to sing these wonderful arias and other classical songs in full voice while doing jobs around the house. Later in life she developed Alzheimer’s as a result of which she forgot who her family was, didn’t recognise herself in the mirror, and would get lost in her own home. Yet if a…

Rowan McCabe was raised to appreciate art. His mum was a teacher who surrounded him with books, and his stepdad was a punk with a penchant for Swan Lake who encouraged him to broaden his cultural horizons. But – like many people – poetry was not a big part of his childhood, or even his early adulthood as an English student. He didn’t encounter it often, and when he did, it was about “country manors, deathly shrouds, serious lords and fluffy clouds” – not the kind of subject matter that resonated with a boy from “a rough estate”.
