David Hockney is back to save spring.
“I intend to carry on with my work,” he said, “which I now see as very important. We have lost touch with nature rather foolishly as we are a part of it, not outside it.”
With these words, Hockney, one of the most important British artists of the 20th century, announced his latest series of works. Though he relocated to a remote farmhouse in Normandy when he turned 80, it did signal a change of pace. And he recorded spring, from start to end, during the 2020 lockdown.
The body of work, 116 pieces, created on iPad then transferred to paper, are part of a major new exhibition which opens at the Royal Academy from May 23.
