Look outside the ‘rotten barrel’
I read your piece on the UN interim report on poverty in the UK and then the alarming article on e-waste [Special Report/Tech, November 26-December 2], an issue of which I was completely ignorant. I guess, like many of your readers, I wondered if there was any real hope of turning any or all of this around. The one thing that really stands out from so much of Big Issue coverage for me is that trying to change traditional structures, whether financial, social or political, for the better is unlikely to succeed, but building new structures outside the ‘rotten barrel’ gives far more reason for optimism.
