London Literature Festival (October 5-16, Southbank, London; southbankcentre.co.uk) is a celebration of reading, writing and thinking, and this year it has a distinct sci-fi bent. Opening with a performed reading of HG Wells’ The Time Machine, the festival features many of the brightest stars in the literary firmament, including Margaret Atwood and Michel Faber. There are also a wide range of family events, poetry readings and talks from the likes of arch-atheist Richard Dawkins.
BFI London Film Festival (October 5-16, various locations, London; bfi.org.uk) has 245 films from 74 different countries over its entire run. There are huge premieres and films from the most exciting new directors from around the world. Here is cinephiles’ Glastonbury.
