The crumble is always traced back to the wartime years in the UK. Rations ruled and so shortcut recipes abounded, like using a simple crumble of flour, lard and sugar (or cheese if savoury) to top a pie. Here, say the books, crumble was born. recipes for “crumble” only started to pop up in British cookbooks after WWII.
