A De Quervain’s (or tenosynovitis) causes a sharp pain at the base of the thumb and wrist which can shoot into the hand or forearm. It’s due to constriction of the thumb tendons as they enter the hand. De Quervain’s is common in new mums and occurs in other situations which stress the area, such as racquet sports. Reducing the inflammation and minimising stressing the tendons is key. Applying ice, resting your hand, NSAID gels and adapting the way you lift your baby usually help.
