My husband showed me a video as I tried to stifle my laughter. A two-metre-long lace monitor was responding to its name like a dog and running to its owner.
“So well trained,” David, 56, marvelled.
Although we loved our staffy, Shoebite, our kids, Kaiden, seven, and Kaylee, five, missed our bearded dragon, Pickles, who’d passed away from old age.
Clearly, David also missed having a reptile around.
“I want to hand-rear three lace monitor hatchlings,” he announced.
It caught me offguard, but I knew the kids would love it.
“They better not grow too big,” I joked, granting permission.
It was September 2018, and after David’s reptile licence came through, we bought three lace monitors…
