Placing the little ball of feline fur into my arms, my mum, Eva, grinned at me.
“What are you going to call her?” she asked.
“Jasmine,” I said, beaming. “Like my best friend at kindy.”
I was three years old and Jasmine was the first of many animals who played a big role in my life.
Growing up, we had dogs, chickens, ducks and even a sheep at one point.
Then, as an adult in 2005, my husband Andrew, 29, and I moved to Rockhampton and I started volunteering at the zoo there.
I loved it so much, I gave up my job teaching violin and started working as a zookeeper.
