MEET THE BANSHEE PDW

Building a 5.7x28mm PDW is a straightforward affair thanks to CMMG’s Banshee upper receiver and magazine kits. For this article, I got my hands on a dedicated 5.7x28mm Banshee 300 upper with an 8-inch barrel and CMMG’s patented radial-delayed blowback operating system. The barrel is made from 416 stainless steel with a medium taper and a 1-in-9-inch twist rate. The muzzle has 1/2x28-tpi threading, and an A2-style flash suppressor is installed. CMMG includes a mil-spec charging handle as well as one of its RML7 M-LOK handguards, and my upper is hardcoat anodized, but for an extra $100, you can choose among 10 different Cerakote color options. MOST PEOPLE HAVE LIMITED BUDGETS. That makes “all-purpose” firearms desirable, especially rifles. Shooters have been cross-purposing rifles for competition, hunting, home defense and even duty use for years. Not everyone can afford a dedicated competition rifle that they can’t hunt with or use against predators or intruders. Many shooters want one gun that will do several things well, without needing a second mortgage. Several companies are starting to meet this need in a few different calibers. In 2014, I tested a .308 Winchester version of the Mossberg MVP Light Chassis (LC) and came away impressed. OPTICS ARE AN INTERESTING ASPECT OF FIREARMS USE. In fact, the entire application of a given firearm can vary simply by what we choose to mount on top. Take AR-15 and AR-10 platforms, for example. STUCK BETWEEN WINTER AND SPRING, TEMPERATURES SWUNG FROM 70 ONE DAY TO 20 THE NEXT. Cold rain dripped from the barn’s tin roof while I gazed out the window and spied yellow jonquil blooms next to my 100-yard berm as I mindlessly thumbed .22-caliber cartridges into a pistol magazine for the 20th time. The verdict was already in regarding the new Ruger-57’s accuracy potential, so I amused myself by plinking at clay birds shoved into the mud from 25 to 50 yards. Nearly all of the 50 targets lay in shattered pieces, so I worked on reducing the remaining orange shards into dust.
