Terraforming Mars was a huge hit when it arrived back in 2016, so when its follow up, the slightly pared down and more card focused Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition, landed in 2021 there was an understandable amount of buzz, hype, and anticipation. On the whole, Ares Expedition performed well, holding a respectable ranking on Board Game Geek - albeit one lagging behind its predecessor’s positioning as one of the top ten games ever. So, considering this context, why did Terraforming Mars: The Dice Game’s announcement arrive with more of a box-fart than a bang? Are we fickle? Fatigued? Or, perhaps, just particularly inclined towards the cult of the new?
