In the $200/£165 ball is some electronics: a teeny Intel Edison computer, a camera, a battery, an inductive charger, some motors, a laser, a speaker, a mic, and more. Leave it at home with a lonely pet and you’ll be able to see them, hear them, send them sounds, and generally annoy the bejesus out of them by sending Pebby whizzing around like a beheaded BB-8, shining its eye-safe laser as it goes.
