Return of the Ugly Shoe
As the search for comfort continues, sartorially challenged footwear gets the boost it deserves

The early Noughties time capsule that reopened at the beginning of the pandemic (see: tie-dye, matching tracksuits, bucket hats) continues to dole out surprising sartorial gifts. And now it’s the turn of the ugly shoe to shine. As we continue to reach for comfort in our wardrobes, Uggs, Crocs, Birkenstocks and Tevas have all seen big bumps in sales. Global fashion shopping platform Lyst’s final quarterly report of 2020, for example, had Birkenstock’s shearling-lined ‘Boston’ clogs in second place on their list of ‘women’s hottest products’ (a padded North Face jacket straight out of the 90s came top, FYI), with searches on the shoe up a massive…
