I can’t wait to get my summer on! One of the benefits of multigenerational living (my parents and I went in together) is that you gain a gardener. Having spent years in flats with no outside space, my gardening know-how is virtually nonexistent. Ma Richmond, however, has serious skills and has made our shared back garden the envy of the street. If you’re renovating a home, pulled-up floorboards or old doors can be repurposed, or try local builders and reclamation yards. Avoid using wood with large cracks, loose knots or if it’s badly warped and brittle. GO BACK TO BLACK Don’t shy away from using black on all four walls. TAKE A SHELFIE A narrow shelf or a row or two of picture ledges makes a good alternative to a gallery wall and allows you to add to or rearrange your display more easily. Start by propping your largest item or picture against the wall, then layer shorter pieces in front, staggering the heights and filling in gaps with smaller ornaments. RUN UP A LADDER Use a ladder propped against a wall to display favourite throws and blankets. You could buy new or pick up an old one in a local junk shop. Have a go at herringbone We’re seeing more companies adding a new slant to metro tiles by arranging them in a herringbone pattern. It not only looks incredible, it’s no more difficult than standard brick layout. Start by drawing a vertical line at the centre point on a piece of cardboard. Dry lay tiles first – cut one at a 45-degree angle from one corner (you will remove a triangle shape) and place with the cut edge along the bottom of the cardboard and a corner on the centre line.
