It’s where we prepare nourishing food, the place friends and family gravitate to, and it’s usually where the best conversations unfold. No wonder I love our kitchen issue so much. At home, we recently renovated our kitchen and – after the dust settled – the whole family was fascinated at how we could all be in the room at the same time without stepping on each other’s toes! THE OWNERS of this house in the Bluffs area of Toronto had been living with the consequences of a bad bathroom reno for more than a decade. They’d fixed some issues (enlarging the room to separate tub and shower, and adding a skylight), but poor workmanship and bad design decisions had netted a leaky shower, high-maintenance materials and a room out of step with their naturehued home. There was no recourse but to gut the bathroom and start over. This time, they asked their friend, designer Samantha Pynn, for help. “They weren’t sure how to put together the materials,” she says. “And in a bathroom, surfaces need to be beautiful, durable and functional.” Storage in the shared family space was a priority, as was a dose of gorgeousness. “I wanted…

Q1 My large living room, dining room and hallway have textured wallpaper that I would like to update. Removing it would be daunting and the plaster walls – the house was built in 1963 – could be damaged in the process. Is it possible to put wallpaper on wallpaper? A. Eastwood, Toronto S@H You can layer wallpaper on wallpaper if the existing layer is strongly secured with no bubbles or frayed or loose edges. The walls need to be primed, skimmed with plaster (to smooth out the existing textured surface) and then re-primed before applying a fresh layer of paper. GLASS ACT Designer Jean-Sylvain Murray used steel-framed glass in his clients’ kitchen as an ode to its location in the historic Griffintown neighbourhood of Montreal. All that glass also ensures the views of downtown and Mount Royal are visible from both the kitchen and the pantry. The pantry’s fridge drawers and countertop space make it a great beverage centre for smoothie, coffee and tea prep. Tons of overflow kitchen storage in the floor-to-ceiling cabinet is supplemented by easy-to-access drawers. “It’s my favourite part of the kitchen,” admits Jean-Sylvain. Designer Michelle Berwick threw out the rule book when she and her husband, Gary, a builder, renovated this ’60s-era cottage in Ontario’s Kawarthas region. Structurally, their goals for the 1,300-square-foot cottage were straightforward: capitalize on the views, maximize the living space and overhaul any elements past their prime. On the decorative front, however, having fun was top of mind. “We wanted to create a cozy, cool, nostalgic space – something different from other cottages,” says Michelle.
