Comfort is a wonderful word. In one sense, you can comfort a loved one, and in another, you can yearn for the comfort of your favourite chair when you’re stuck in traffic on a cold and rainy November night. It goes without saying that we want our homes to be comfortable, but when your design concept is based on the goal of comfort, good things happen. When I look at the homes in this issue, I realize that in each of them, I’m drawn to the comfort that’s integral to their design. It’s not every day that Avenue Design principal Eva Healy gets an assignment like this: a sprawling three-level penthouse atop a chic boutique hotel with breathtaking views of Toronto from doubleheight windows and its own rooftop terrace. It should come as no surprise that dramatic colour was the jumping-off point for this vibrant Toronto residence. “The homeowners had seen an article featuring one of our designs, an intensely deepteal bathroom, and were attracted to our bold use of colour,” says Beth Lowenfeld, founder and principal of Four Blocks South, who, in tandem with design director Leah Shannon, charged this clean-lined, 3,000-square-foot space with vivid warmth.
