ACER PREDATOR HELIOS NEO 16 The 2024 Helios Neo 16 is a high-end gaming laptop, but not one that blasts off into the stratosphere like the Razer Blade 16. This review model, complete with a banging Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU and 32GB of RAM, will currently set you back £1999. The main statement piece is the customisable light-up logo on the metal lid; the rest is made of plastic, so the parts you touch don’t get hot over the average play session. Acer has given this PC an LCD screen with an ultra-high 240Hz refresh rate, but it uses a universal backlight so blacks can look a little greyish in darker scenes. All the body plates are plastic rather than metal, but the hinge is totally wobble-free, and the whole thing feels solid and not remotely cheap. The screen is a cut above some in this class too, with a matt finish to minimise reflections and a brightness that, while hardly scorching, doesn’t look dingy. TURTLE BEACH VELOCITYONE RACE For the most authentic Xbox driving experience, whether you’re racing in Forza or the next F1, direct-drive is really the only way to go. The downside is that these wheels usually cost a huge sum, making them the exclusive preserve of serious simmers with money to burn. RAZER BLADE 16 Right, let’s just get it out of the way: this laptop costs an absolute fortune. Even without all the upgrades I’ve got here – an Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics card, 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD (taking it over £4000) – the 2024 Blade 16 is still expensive. 2XKO When it comes to competitive PC gaming, Riot Games is one of the big players, from League of Legends to Valorant. The universe of LoL had quite the expansion with the hit Netflix animation Arcane, and the next spin-off will take it to new uncharted territory: fighting games. After spending several years going by ‘Project L’, 2XKO isn’t simply made up of a roster pulled from League and rendered in beautiful cel-shaded 3D visuals – it’s also built from the ground up to appeal to a wide audience instead of just hardcore fighter fans. It starts with a streamlined control scheme that will be familiar to fans of Super Smash Bros; instead of complex inputs, there’s an emphasis on rhythm and spacing. ASTRO BOT After starring in one of the best showcases for the PSVR, and the very best showcase for the PS5’s DualSense controller, Sony’s adorable mascot is finally getting his own proper adventure. It’s even self-titled, a bit like when a pop star does that a few albums into their career, and this bot’s star surely deserves to rise. How refreshing is it for a PS5 blockbuster to come with the wonder of Nintendo and the blue skies of Sega? Astro Bot looks set to fill PS5 players with as much delight as Astro’s Playroom did at the console’s launch.
