I OWN a One Tonner! If you didn’t catch the news last issue, my much-loved EJ was in a bad prang, so naturally I immediately bought an HZ One Tonner as part of the grieving process. I found it online in Bundaberg and asked my mate Kieren to check it out for me. He gave it the thumbs-up, so I called the seller and sealed the deal. With the HZ already registered and running, I caught a bomber to Bundy to pick it up and attempt to drive it home. What could go wrong? HE MIGHT have a few more grey hairs, but 68-year-old Rosco McGlashan has no plans of slowing down thanks to a fire in the belly that was lit when he saw Donald Campbell break the world land speed record as a kid. Already the fastest Aussie on Earth, with an official record of 500mph (805.5km/h) and a 638mph one-way run that was quicker than the world record at the time, Rosco’s not even close to satisfied. With the Poms currently holding the land speed record at 763.035mph (1227.985km/h), Rosco wants to smash that and then be the first person to reach 1000mph on land. CHERRY ON TOP WORD on the street is that serial Drag Challenge competitor Brendan Cherry is up to no good. We’ve seen him campaign both a turbo LS HQ Monaro and a gorgeous boosted big-block HK coupe at DC, but he has liberated the HK of its powertrain and has teamed up with good mate and fellow Drag Challenger Josh Ploeger to build a mega-tough VL Commodore, using most of the HK’s vital organs. A pretty serious rollcage has been made up, along with a tubular front end, and they’ve also gone to a 315 radial, which will place the VL in the Turbosmart Outlaw Blown class. ALICE SPRINGS INLAND DRAGWAY IS A REAL GEM; IT’S PROBABLY THE FLATTEST TRACK IN AUSTRALIA. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A 400 THUNDER ROUND THERE I’D LIKE to begin this month’s column by giving a shout-out to one of the hidden gems on the Australian drag racing scene: Alice Springs Inland Dragway, home of the Desert Nationals. After the Nitro Up North event in Darwin, we travelled down the highway to race at Alice Springs. The drag strip there is a real gem and a credit to the Central Australian Drag Racing Association. ACCOMPANYING Kyle’s XE Falcon during Drag Challenge Weekend was a sleeper VTII Calais (pictured) owned by Kyle’s customer and mate Scott Whitley. With oh-so-90s pearl paint, lovely soft grey leather trim and a sunroof, the comfy Calais definitely flies under the radar, with no hints to its 720+ horses and flat 10sec performance! The built 6.0L LS with a BorgWarner S480 turbo fit without too many hassles; the power steer pump was converted to electric. As well as the turbo, breathing has been upgraded with Edelbrock and Plazmaman bits that relocate the throttlebody. A Haltech Elite 2500 is the little black box, with boost set to 15psi, tuned by Jez at DVS Tuning. Behind the LS is a TCE 3500rpm converter, a built Powerglide and standard-type limited slip diff. SASSY MACHINE VICTORIAN Mark Sass is in the final stages of modifying his VT Berlina in preparation for this year’s Street Machine Drag Challenge. The car is running a 427ci LS with a big Vortech V-28 112 blower off the front of the crank, backed by a TH400 and a nine-inch rear end with a four-link. “The biggest challenge has been running the front-mount blower and keeping it streetable,” Mark said. “We don’t want to cut the car up; it still has the original K-frame, stock rails, no rear intercooler set-up and we have left the firewall stock. “On 28psi boost it’s now showing 1300hp at the tyres, but the motor is capable of holding 35-40psi.” In recent testing the car went 8.70@160mph on it first pass.
