CRUMBS!
In 1965, Gemini 3 astronaut John Young brought a special treat into space for his fellow space traveller, Gus Grissom: a corned beef sandwich. Gus took a bite… and bits of bread went everywhere! Crumbs can cause lots of problems in microgravity, as they get into the electronics and air systems. Now, NASA always searches astronauts for extra snacks before launch!
Tortillas are soft, crumb-free, and easy to roll up. They’re great for making space sandwiches!
FIRST MEAL!
On 12 April, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space when he was launched into orbit on Vostok 1. His meals came in aluminium tubes that were squeezed to get the food out. He had beef and liver paste, with chocolate sauce for dessert!
