Louis and his big brother and sisters helped to care for the animals. In autumn, they squashed the grapes to make wine.
Louis’s father, Simon-René, made harnesses for horses. He used sharp tools to cut the parts out of tough leather.
“If you do something, do the best job you can!” Simon-René told his youngest son.
Louis liked his father’s workshop. It smelled of wood and wax! The boy would play with spare bits of leather he found.
