CHOOSE YOUR HERO! When you read a story, you meet new people – the characters that star in it! For this activity, we want your club members to choose and write about one of their favourite story friends. WHAT MAKES THEM GREAT? Before your next Story Club meeting, members should pick a favourite character from a book or story and think about why they like them! Print out copies of the My Hero! sheet by scanning the QR code opposite. Bring them and coloured pens/pencils to the club meeting. GET CREATIVE! The delivery of the diphtheria medicine to Nome became famous! It was called the Great Race of Mercy or the Serum Run, and Balto and Togo were celebrities. They were taken on tours and crowds came to see them. Togo was awarded a medal by Antarctic explorer Roald Amundsen and competed in several races. He retired from sledding at the age of 12. Seppala kept him as a pet, and the dog died in 1929, at the age of 16. Togo's legacy lives on among the sled dog racing community, and he is considered one of the greatest sled dogs of all time. Linen is the oldest known fabric, and we humans have been making it since 5000BCE. It is made by spinning and weaving the fibres found in flax leaves. Linen is cool to wear and was so valuable that in Ancient Egypt it was sometimes used as money! Silk is considered one of the most precious fabrics because it is smooth and shimmers beautifully in the light. Most silk comes from silkworms, but some spiders and insects also produce it. The Chinese discovered how to make silk in around 3600BCE, and they did their best to keep this secret for centuries! Silk is amazingly strong as well as being beautiful.
