After her experiences in the influenza epidemic, Florence Nightingale decided to become a nurse. Her parents thought it wasn't a ‘ladylike’ profession, but Florence didn't care. She did her medical training in Germany and then managed the Institute for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen in London. At the start of the Crimean War (1853-6), the conditions in military hospitals were terrible and many soldiers got ill. Florence organised a group of volunteer nurses and took charge of the British hospital at Scutari in 1854. She improved the conditions there and saved many lives. This work made her famous, and she was nicknamed ‘the Lady with the Lamp’ for caring for sick and wounded soldiers.
