After spending many years in Kublai Khan's court, Marco, Niccolò and Maffeo asked if they could go back home. The khan did not want them to go, but he finally gave them permission in 1291. He loaded them down with many valuable gifts, and they got back to Venice in 1295. At that time, the city was at war with the city of Genoa. Marco bought a ship and took part in the fighting, but he was captured and locked up!
