I’ve always wanted to create a boho-inspired mandala with 3D elements. This past year, while teaching my 6-year-old son about the full moon in spring, I was inspired by the stars, the moon, and the blooming flowers around us. I envisioned bringing these elements to life through 3D embroidery, each uniquely crafted but seamlessly connected. Giraffes are one of my favourite animals. With their long legs and necks, they move in a comically ungraceful way when they run. But it’s their beautiful, long eyelashes that truly captured my heart and made me fall in love with them. Their unique colouring also makes them the perfect subject for creating with used teabags. YOU WILL NEED MATERIALS • At least 8 used and thoroughly dried breakfast teabags (the ones that are brown after you’ve made the tea). Back Stitch Bring thread through on the stitch line and take a small backward stitch through the fabric. Bring the needle through again a little in front of the first stitch, take another stitch, inserting the needle at the point where it first came through. Repeat. Can you tell us a bit about your yourself, your background and how you got started with embroidery? Hello! I’m Freya, originally from Rutland, the smallest county in the UK (basically the middle of nowhere!), but I now live in Southwest London. My love for embroidery started at a very young age. Growing up in a creative family, surrounded by art and music, sewing has always been a part of my life. Introduction and background I’m Nikki Parmenter, and I was invited to take on the role of Chair of Textile Connections in October 2022. I was delighted to take on the responsibility and I have introduced some new initiatives to the group, such as our Facebook page and digital presentations during our meetings. Our group, based in Hadfield near Glossop, has been running since 2004, and we currently have approximately 25 members.
