When it comes to waiting W for things to happen, I can be a little impatient. Eco dyeing is no exception, it can take quite some time to get good results. I’ve done a lot of experimenting with leaves in my heat press and have had some surprising outcomes. Not everyone will have a heat press, so I practised with an old iron which worked equally as well. Now I can share it with you. HOW-TO MAKE IRON AND ONION WATER • Prepare two bowls, one with the onion water and one with iron water. How long have you been focused on medieval embroidery? I’ve always loved the medieval period, and since I was about 15 I’ve focused on medieval embroidery, first as embellishment for reenactment costumes, and then in its own right. I focus mainly on the stitches current in northern Europe from the 8th century to 15th century, with specific focus on the techniques of Opus Anglicanum (hence my social media handle) and laid and couched work. Applying a Bead Secure the bead with a single stitch. Back Stitch Bring thread through on the stitch line and take C a small backward stitch through the fabric. Bring D the needle through again a little in front of the first E stitch, take another stitch, inserting the needle at the point where it first came through. Repeat. Apart from contemporary portraiture, it is the greatest single collection of Elizabethan jewellery in the world. The collection has over 500 pieces of diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires, pearls and peridot. Peridot is a light green semi-precious stone with golden tones. More utilitarian versions were made of patched fabric scraps and many were embroidered and initialled much like contemporary samplers. Because they weren’t being seen and had to be durable, they were made of simple cotton or linen. The height of their popularity was during the 18th century and it is from that century my reproduction has been inspired.
