There’s cause for celebration across the UK this summer, as parties, events and exhibitions take place to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee! One such exhibition takes place at Windsor Castle from 7th July to 26th September 2022; Platinum Jubilee: The Queen’s Coronation. Showcasing Her Majesty The Queen’s Coronation Dress, designed by Sir Norman Hartnell, and her Coronation Robe by Ede & Ravenscroft, the exhibition allows you to view in person the exquisite embroidered details that form an integral part of both garments. The Queen herself requested that Sir Norman Hartnell create her Coronation Dress. • Always use Gütermann Sew All thread or similar quality thread. • Wax the thread by running it a few times through beeswax. • Cut the desired length of pearl purl by roughly measuring around the shape. • Hold each end and pull gently to open the coil. Stretching allows the couching thread to slip between the coils making it invisible. • When couching, you should hear a slight pop when the thread settles in the coils. • If your thread sits on top without slipping inside the coils, the stitch is not at the correct angle and may kink the wire. The legs and the head will be stitched using Or Nue. This technique consists of couching a twist using a combination of matching and contrasting threads to make the pattern appear on top by changing the colour of the couching thread. • In this piece, we will couch one length of twist at a time, not as a pair. • I will indicate the matching couching thread and for this thread, the couching stitches can be 2-3mm apart. • For the contrasting couching thread that will make up the splotches of colour on top, make sure your couching stitches are as close together as possible to completely cover the metallic twist. • Only use one strand of stranded cotton. As a City & Guilds student I was required to study several designer makers and my favourite was C June Barnes. I loved experimenting with her ideas of using a wool shrinkable base and natural fabrics to stitch and then to dye. This led me to try out alternative materials and develop my own ways of creating highly textured and coloured surfaces and adding hand embellishments to appeal to embroiderers. The body will be covered in two types of chipping: • Traditional chipping: the various purls are cut in tiny pieces, about 1-2mm. They are stitched in place in the same way as you would beads, using waxed Gutermann thread. They should lie flat next to each over with no overlap. • ’Wiggly’ chipping is used on the top part of the back. This type of chipping almost breaks all the rules of the traditional chipping. Cut the chips a lot longer, about 5-6mm. Stitch them the same way, using waxed Gutermann but make sure they bend and overlap over each other to give extra texture. If the chip breaks as you apply them, just leave it as part of the extra texture. • One rule does apply for both…
