TEAM GB Paralympian Fabienne André launched the Bluebell Railway’s new wheelchair-accessible Pullman carriage, Car No. 54, into service on April 24.
Acquired by the railway in 1984, the restoration and conversion of the 1923-built Third Class Pullman carriage began in autumn 2016, partly funded by a £75,000 Department for Transport grant to enable wheelchair access. This has involved fitting electric lifts in the double doors of the luggage compartment, widening the internal doorway into the passenger area, and raising the table height, while leaving the exterior unaltered. In addition, while most of the seating in Car No. 54 is fixed, there are three loose chairs to provide flexibility for accessibility. It is believed to be the first wheelchair-accessible Pullman car in Britain.
