THE EAST Lancashire Railway has launched two separate appeals to help fund vital repairs to its historic locomotive works at Bury and Higher Woodhill Viaduct near Burrs.
The railway has passed the first phase application stage for grants of £1,000,000 to go towards repairing the viaduct, and £2,000,000 for the repairs to the roof of its Grade II‑listed 1856‑built Baron Street works. However, to secure these grants, the railway needs to demonstrate it can provide a degree of matchfunding, to which end the ELR has launched appeals to raise £50,000 towards the viaduct, and £75,000 for the locomotive works.
