THE DOWNPATRICK & County Down Railway – Ireland’s only 5ft 3in gauge heritage line – has launched an emergency appeal after suffering “an absolute disaster” following major flooding in Downpatrick at the end of October and start of November.
The railway said that its site had been “totally overwhelmed” by the floodwater, which submerged streets and inundated shops in the town centre when the nearby River Quoile overflowed its banks. D&CDR vice chairman Mike Beckett said on November 2 that “the railway has been completely inundated, with severe flooding across much of our railway lines, station, sheds, yard, outside storage, and other areas.
