Such is the nature of Steam Days articles that ‘last days’ or line closures are either at the heart of a feature, such as Essendine-Stamford and Ringwood-Christchurch in this current issue, or they get a mention within captions, broadening the overall understanding of a railway’s timeline – Wansford-Stamford, Ashchurch-Great Malvern, Ashchurch-Evesham-Redditch, the ‘Old Road’ (Southampton & Dorchester Railway) and ‘Port Road’ (Portpatrick & Wigtownshire Joint Railway) are in that category. The first five of those predate the Beeching era of widespread closures or, in the case of Evesham-Redditch, the writing was likely already on the wall. It was temporarily closed on October 1, 1962, due to poor track condition, but wasn’t deemed worthy of investment, so never reopened.
