Spatial inequities in the City of Cape Town are compounding the alarmingly high levels of food insecurity. This is according to the State of the City Food System Report released yesterday by University of Cape Town (UCT) researchers Gareth Haysom and Associate Professor Jane Battersby. The report found that accessing food in Cape Town was a constant uphill battle, especially for those who did not have nearly enough to feed themselves and their families. The report argued there was more than enough healthy food in the food system, but food was inaccessible to those who needed it most, Haysom said. A driver has been fined after he was caught on camera bumping into a female lion in the Kruger National Park (KNP) last week. In the clip, widely shared on social media, the Toyota Land Cruiser can be seen trying to steer through traffic. Two lions can be seen walking in front of the vehicle and they stop. Former Free State premier Ace Magashule’s former personal assistant, Moroadi Cholota, has been remanded in custody as bail proceedings are set to continue today. A Stellenbosch community activist has been left battered and bruised after a PSL player allegedly assaulted him with a glass at a local bar in the Western Cape. The second quarter crime stats for 2023/24 showed that women continued to be the target of gender-based violence (GBV) during night time activities. A total of 1 514 incidents of attempted murders involving female victims were recorded between July and September 2023. The Fundza Literacy Trust annual survey has revealed that 81% of its South African female mobisite users who are not studying, either in high school or higher education institutions, are unemployed; while 7.7% had given up job hunting. Fundza is a popular literacy mobisite, with more than 4.1 million users, that aims to increase young women’s access to user-generated and zero-rated reading materials in order to amplify reading culture in the country.
