TWO more victims have come forward following the arrest of three suspects in Woodstock accused of kidnapping and robbing their Grindr dates. Mlungisi Mbutu, 37, Bongani Zulu, 36, and Zwelakhe Ngwenya, 25, are accused of luring three victims they catfished on the gay dating app, only to kidnap, rob and assault them. The Hawks closed in on the suspects after they abducted a 50-year-old man on June 14, who was subsequently rescued. Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani said analysis of suspicious banking activity and money transfer patterns by the suspects at various banks led them to the suspects. Standard Bank said that it believes the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) will cut the interest rate twice before the end of the year. The bank argued that these cuts are the outcome of last month’s successful election and will provide a much-needed financial boost to the economy. Standard Bank predicts that the first repo rate cut could be by September. THE PRUDENTIAL Authority (PA) yesterday reported that it investigated 134 referrals alleging non-compliance with various laws such as the Insurance Act and levied administrative penalties totalling R2.7 million against four organisations under its ambit during the 2023/24 year. At the same time, the PA reported that two entities were under curatorship, while one institution was under statutory management, two under judicial management, and a further two in liquidation as the authority seeks to safeguard depositors and policy holders. CITY of Tshwane officials implicated in irregular expenditure amounting to R246 million are in hot water after the municipal public accounts committee (Mpac) called for the funds to be recouped and paid from their pockets. Committee chairperson Kholofelo Morodi said the tough stance against officials would send a clear message that financial mismanagement will not be tolerated in the municipality. The irregularly spent millions of rand were flagged by the committee during its review of financial activities in the municipality. LABOUR unions have vowed to fight for the rights of directors-general (DGs) in ministers’ offices, saying that senior public servants are also protected by the country’s labour laws. Border Management Authority commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato has announced that BMA port health officials have developed an outbreak preparedness plan that outlines the response in dealing with mpox. Mpox is an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. So far, South Africa has had two deaths and 13 confirmed cases. A response plan has been activated. The World Health Organization says the multi-country outbreak of mpox from January 1, 2022, to April 30, 2024, showed 97 208 laboratory-confirmed cases with 186 deaths from 117 countries. Masiapato said the BMA is implementing screening processes, including temperature checks, for travellers entering the country at all ports of entry. “BMA port health officers are vigilant to observe any lesions and other symptoms to ensure immediate reporting of any suspected mpox symptom profile.”…

The National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) has confirmed a cyberattack that compromised its systems and infrastructure. The incident occurred on Saturday morning, but the NHLS says all patient data is safe. “Preliminary investigation suggests that our Enterprise Resource Planning (Oracle) environment and Laboratory Information System (LIS) (TrakCare) database and our CDW are not affected, therefore no patient data has been lost or compromised,” the NHLS said. “The investigation indicated that a ransomware virus was utilised to target selected points in the NHLS IT systems, rendering them inaccessible and blocking communication from the LIS and other databases to and from users. “As such, all our systems remain inaccessible both internally and externally, including to and from healthcare facilities until the integrity of the environment is secured and repaired. The high court sitting in East London found the municipality had failed abysmally to meet its constitutional and legal obligations to the applicant. Judge Belinda Hartle said Octavia Ngceke had clearly been traumatised by the excessive billing for almost three years. Ngceke had tried to sort out the problem with the municipality for more than a year.
