Paris: Rubbish collectors could strike this month, a major French union said yesterday, raising the spectre of piles of stinking trash on the streets during the Olympic Games. Theft and vandalism are suspected to have caused the fire which engulfed underground tunnels along the M1 near Smit Street in Joburg, resulting in several communities being left without electricity. IN A RECENT determination, Pension Funds Adjudicator Muvhango Lukhaimane has severely criticised a pension fund that delayed paying out a death benefit for an astonishing 27 years. The determination also emphasises the duty of funds to actively trace beneficiaries of deceased members. When a retirement fund member dies, two amounts of money normally become due: the member’s accumulated retirement savings, known as “pension interest”, and a life insurance payout. Together, these make up the member’s “death benefit”, which may be a sizeable sum of money. Section 37C of the Pension Funds Act governs the distribution of death benefits. Funds must not only take into account beneficiaries named on the nomination form, but also relatives or other people who were financially dependant on the deceased. ABOUT 600 000 students are unable to receive their graduation certificates after completing their studies as they owe more than R5.8 billion to the country’s universities in outstanding fees. This was revealed by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande when he responded to parliamentary questions from EFF MP Vuyani Pambo. Pambo had asked for a breakdown of the number of students who owed university fees and could not receive their certificates. Nzimande’s responses showed that 19 universities had indicated that they were owed fees by students while six had yet to respond to questions. “Included in the balances are amounts owed by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme where the close out process has not been finalised,” Nzimande said. WHILE suffering numerous legal defeats recently, including that a ruling declaring the new RAF1 form requiring a claimant to have all documentation in order before lodging a claim was illegal, the fund launched its backlog campaign yesterday. RAF CEO Collins Letsoalo said the fund had a huge backlog of claims that had not been finalised. Through the launch of the “Drive Your Claim Forward” campaign, claimants were urged to contact the RAF’s call centre to establish what was needed to finalise their claims.
