MANUFACTURING production in- creased by a higher than expected 4.1% in February compared with the same month a year before. Statistics SA data showed the biggest positive contributions came from wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing, as well as petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products. Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production, however, decreased 0.3% in February compared with January 2024. This followed month-on-month changes of 0.4% in January 2024 and -0.6% in December 2023. FNB senior economist Thanda Sit- hole said this decline was disappointing, particularly given the subdued quar- terly gross domestic product (GDP) growth regime. I am saddened by the death of veteran South African actor Chris April. Our first encounter was at the popular night club Swingers, in Wetton, where he amazed onlookers with his jazz dance prowess. April carried his age extremely well and was well into his sixties when he graced the dance floor, often with a beautiful lady on his arm. I recognised him from the TV ads he had appeared in, but he accepted the adoration with absolute modesty. Occasionally I’d see him in the Lansdowne area, always displaying a broad smile. We shall miss Bra Chris who rubbed shoulders with great actors such as Forest Whittaker, John Kani and Adam Sandler. IN A GOOD first step the government, through an accelerated depreciation allowance, would promote the production of electric vehicle (EV) in South Africa, Automotive Business Council (Naamsa) CEO Mikel Mabasa said yesterday. He said in an interview with Business Report that the investment allowance was particularly generous, considering the state of the fiscus and local economy and that there were a great deal of competing needs for government support. SOUTH Africa’s largest and oldest crypto asset service provider, Luno, has secured a licence from the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) to operate as a financial services provider. Luno is the first dedicated crypto asset service provider in South Africa to be awarded its financial services provider licence, following the FSCA’s declaration of crypto assets as a financial product in terms of the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act (FAIS). In 2022, the FSCA declared crypto assets to be financial products and said they needed to be regulated in order to protect financial customers from risks and prevent money laundering and terrorism financing. COSATU has welcomed the reopening of Optimum Coal Mine, saying that it will boost Eskom’s generation as it has potential to produce 13.5 million tons of the energy commodity. Cosatu’s acting national spokesperson, Matthew Parks, said the reopening of Optimum would also add to restoring employment for the more than 500 workers at the mine as well as pushing up exports of coal. The South African government's decision to forbid plant-based foods from using names that sound like meat has sparked outrage among makers of alternative meat. The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) announced on June 22, last year, that names such as “veggie biltong”, “plant-based meatballs”, and “vegan nuggets” won't be allowed anymore.
